Over the past two years, Cali rapper Kid Ink has been one of the internet’s greatest success stories when it comes to hip-hop and succeeding where so many have failed, in translating a huge online presence into real success in the real world. After reaching out to industry heavyweight DJ Ill Will to host his first mixtape back in 2010, then under the name of Rockstar, Ill Will accepted and after the pair finally met at a video shoot, they came together to form Tha Alumni Music Group, of which Kid Ink was the first artist to sign to but now boasts a 12 strong roster of rappers, producers, video directors, DJs and executives.
Now under the moniker of Kid Ink, the pair then went on to release a succession of mixtapes, “Daydreamer”, “Crash Landing” and “Wheels Up”, which all consisted solely of original material, bought about mass acclaim from the public and music world and have since amassed hundreds of thousands of downloads each. Fast forward to 2012 and he’s featured on the XXL Freshman cover, released his debut album “Up & Away” which peaked at #20 on the Billboard 200 and #2 on the Billboard Top Rap Albums without any major label backing and embarked on a sold out headline European tour, where LozzaMusic.com got the chance to sit down with the man himself before hitting the stage at King’s College London.
In the first part of the interview, Kid Ink speaks on his mentality towards striving towards your goals and aspirations, his musical beginnings and his relationship with DJ Ill Will, his “ink”, what it’s like to work with Alex Nazari and why he puts out so many music videos and finally, his most memorable groupie encounter!
